Hearing colors, tasting shapes.

چکیده
When Matthew Blakeslee shapes hamburger patties with his hands, he experiences a vivid bitter taste in his mouth. Esmerelda Jones (a pseudonym) sees blue when she listens to the note C sharp played on the piano; other notes evoke different hues--so much so that the piano keys are actually color-coded, making it easier for her to remember and play musical scales. And when Jeff Coleman looks at printed black numbers, he sees them in color, each a different hue. Blakeslee, Jones and Coleman are among a handful of otherwise normal people who have synesthesia. They experience the ordinary world in extraordinary ways and seem to inhabit a mysterious noman's-land between fantasy and reality. For them the senses--touch, taste, hearing, vision and smell--get mixed up instead of remaining separate.

Synesthesia in science and technology: more than making the unseen visible.
Much of our science and technology relies on the visualization of complex data, and chemical biology, more than most fields, often deals with complex datasets. There are, however, other ways of making information available to our senses beyond the visual. Rare individuals naturally have sensory crossover, whose synesthesia permits them, for example, to see colors or shapes when hearing sounds o...

If you‟ve seen Fantasia, you know what it feels like to see music. Symphonies are converted to scenes and landscapes; sounds are visualized as a plethora of colors, shapes, and movements. For most people, this is a hypersensual experience, but for a select few, hearing colors and seeing music is a perfectly normal way to experience the world. Synesthesia is the condition in which a stimulus of ...
متن کاملA New Wine Tasting Approach Based on Emotional Responses to Rapidly Recognize Classic European Wine Styles
Conventional tasting sheets are widely used to evaluate wine quality in wine tasting competitions. However, the higher scores are mostly obtained by international commercial wines, resulting in lower scores being awarded to the classic European wines. We hypothesize that this is due to the tasting methodology that fails to recognize this wine style. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to sh...
متن کاملHearing Colors and Tasting Shapes: a Paradigm Shift in the Brain
This overview reviews various varieties of synesthesia and describes a general brain mechanism as the result of inheriting a genetic mutation for hyperconnectivity among brain areas. The automatic sensory joining of perceptual synesthesia is contrasted to deliberate contrivances and metaphor, the former being involuntary, spatially extended, durable and generic, memorable, and affect laden. Dem...
